Students today got to practice what they learned this quarter in a game of Integer Football. We have loved using our own Chromebooks the last couple of weeks! Here is the link and I will add it to our resources page as well.
Integer Football

Students in class have done their research, looking at statistics, listened to commentary predicting the top picks for this year's NCAA football lineup. We are using football in a semester-long project to learn about integers, rational numbers, statistics, and probability. So far, we have utilized football to talk about adding and subtracting integers, multiplying and dividing integers, and now moving into fractions and decimals. This is all leading up to our uncovering skills in statistics and probability. Students chose to follow these teams: Alabama, Ohio State University, Florida State University, The University of Florida, and Louisiana State University. Which one would you pick? What information would you want to know about the team to decide? What information will you need to follow during the season to determine probability of the team entering a bowl game? How do athletes use math?
Stay tuned to this blog to see pics and posts about our projects! Math is super duper important in life! Here is NFL player and mathlete, John Urschel, to tell you about that! www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/06/29/john-urschel-math-problem_n_7687732.html?utm_hp_ref=mathematics We had a representative from the district offices come to visit our classroom during Hour of Code. Check out these links to her posts!
Please follow these links to participate in class. I will be giving you a schedule, but feel free to come back to this blog to have more fun outside of class too! Please comment below on what your favorite part of Hour of Code was and how you used math during the hour of code to solve problems. The Hour of Code is Here! video Khan Academy Hour of Code Bitsbox Code.org Next week, we will be exploring coding and computer science. How does this fit into Math class you say? Stay tuned to find out! I will be posting pictures of our events and students will be blogging about their experience here as well.
Have you ever wondered which item was the better deal or tried to get the most for your money? You can see how unit rate is being utilized across grade levels currently. Here are some links to skills you currently need by YOUR grade level:
8th Grade: Interpreting the Unit Rate as Slope _6th and 7th Grade: Rates and Ratios Have you used your unit rate skills recently in the real world? Leave a comment about how you were able to apply your new skills to get extra points! Have you been practicing this summer? Hopefully you have been relaxing and enjoying your time off, but also reading and keeping all you learned last year fresh in your mind. I have been keeping track of those people who have been using Khan Academy to practice their skills. Make sure you hit the ground running this year! If you haven't been practicing, it is not too late! Get on it today and remind yourself of those skills you worked so hard at last year so this year is even easier. I will give bonus points toward our summer contest to any student that replies on this blog entry about one skill they practiced this summer. I can't wait to see you all back at school!
On March 14, we celebrate pi. This year is the epic Pi Day! Students will be trying to earn a Pi Day Party for their class through the use of TRIBES. Each class is eligible to earn 4 points each day for Attentive Listening, Mutual Respect, Participation, and Appreciation - No Put Downs. Our 7th grade teams are learning how to use pi to solve real-world problems involving circular situations. If you are interested in learning more about pi, please check out this website!
