A little note about me...
This picture is of me at the Chicago Blackhawk Stanley Cup Celebration and Rally in June 2015. I am a huge hockey fan. I know - there is no hockey in Hawaii, but I still love to watch it. The Blackhawks have been a big help to their community and a school I use to teach at. The players are great role models and love what they do. Their players have a lot of perseverance. They keep playing even when they have had teeth knocked out!
I moved from Chicago to Kauai in 2014 to be a 6th, 7th, 8th grade math teacher at Waimea Canyon Middle School. I have taught in many areas of education including 1st grade, Response to Intervention, Music, and most recently middle school Special Education. Prior to becoming a teacher I worked in the business world in many different roles for 10 years.
My philosophy is that many students in special education are just like everyone else. They just learn in a different way so I want all my students to understand that the way we learn is what makes each of us unique. It doesn't mean someone is dumb or stupid. They just need a different approach. In fact, many students with special needs are often extremely intelligent. Some of the most famous people had special needs. It is my job to help my students find their strengths and confidence.
Some of the things I enjoy doing in my free time include singing, hiking, playing the piano (I taught piano for 10 years), yoga, snorkeling, dancing, and art. I also enjoy shopping and finding free stuff! I like to incorporate my students' interests into the curriculum so I ask a lot of questions to get to know them. I look forward to another year of growing and learning!
